Bolton’s housing stock, board by board
Halliwell, Great Lever and Daubhill are classic mill-town terrace territory, with rewireable boxes and meter positions that have moved two or three times over the decades, leaving long, tired meter tails behind. The 1930s semis around Heaton and Smithills usually carry a 1970s Wylex, and the ex-council stock in Breightmet and Tonge Moor has 1980s split-load boards without a single RCBO.
Bolton is also electric shower country. A striking number of BL houses have a shower switchfuse bolted next to an already-full board. One modern board with proper capacity replaces the patchwork, and the shower finally gets the 45A circuit it was always supposed to have.
