Is a consumer unit the same as a fuse board?

Yes. Consumer unit is the technical name, fuse board and fuse box are the everyday names. Whatever you call it, it is the grey or white box that everything electrical in your house runs through. If yours has switches it is a consumer unit; if it has wire fuses you have an old fuse box and that page is written for you.

What a new consumer unit actually gets you

This is not a like-for-like swap. The 18th Edition of BS 7671 changed what a good board looks like, and the difference is worth understanding before you compare quotes.

An RCBO on every circuit Older boards share one RCD across half the house, so one faulty kettle trips the lot. An RCBO protects each circuit on its own with 30mA earth fault protection. A fault in the kitchen stays in the kitchen.
Surge protection (SPD) built in A surge protection device absorbs voltage spikes before they reach your boiler board, TV or laptop chargers. BS 7671 now expects one in most homes and we fit it as standard on full boards.
A metal, non-combustible enclosure Since 2016 the regulations require consumer units in homes to be metal or otherwise non-combustible, so a fault inside the board cannot become a fire outside it. Plastic boards are the single most common EICR observation we see.
Room to grow We fit boards with spare ways, so an EV charger, electric shower or garden supply later is a small job, not another new board.

When a consumer unit should be replaced

If your board is plastic, has no Test button anywhere, or trips the whole house when one thing goes wrong, it is doing less than a modern board would. None of those on their own mean danger today, but an EICR will usually code them.

If your EICR has already come back unsatisfactory with the board coded C2, replacement is normally the fix the report is pointing at. Our failed EICR page explains the codes in plain English.

And if you are about to add a big load like a 10.5kW shower or a 7kW car charger, most installers will not connect it to an old board at all. Doing the board first is the right order.

What it costs

RCBO consumer units start at £449 fixed, and most homes land between £449 and £750. The number of circuits sets the base price; earthing, bonding or meter tail upgrades are the usual extras and we price them from your photos, not on the day.
