Is a consumer unit the same as a fuse board? Yes.

Consumer unit is the technical name. Fuse board and fuse box are the everyday names. It is the grey or white box everything electrical in your house runs through. If yours has switches, it is a consumer unit. If it has wire fuses, the old fuse box page is written for you.

What a new consumer unit actually gets you

This is not a like-for-like swap. BS 7671 changed what a good board looks like, and the difference is worth understanding before you compare quotes.

An RCBO on every circuit Older boards share one RCD across half the house, so one faulty kettle trips the lot. An RCBO protects each circuit on its own. A fault in the kitchen stays in the kitchen.
Surge protection built in A surge protection device absorbs voltage spikes before they reach your boiler, TV or chargers. BS 7671 now expects one in most homes and we fit it as standard.
A metal, non-combustible enclosure Since 2016 consumer units in homes must be metal or otherwise non-combustible, so a fault inside cannot become a fire outside. Plastic boards are the most common EICR observation we see.
Room to grow We fit boards with spare ways, so an EV charger, electric shower or garden supply later is a small job, not another new board.

Signs it is time

When a consumer unit should be replaced

  • It is plastic, has no Test button anywhere, or trips the whole house when one thing goes wrong. None of those mean danger today, but an EICR will usually code them.
  • Your EICR has come back unsatisfactory with the board coded C2. Replacement is normally the fix the report is pointing at.
  • You are about to add a big load like a 10.5kW shower or a 7kW car charger. Most installers will not connect to an old board, so the board comes first.
