What does a new consumer unit cost in Whitefield?
Fixed from your photos at £449 for up to 6 circuits, £549 for up to 10 or £695 for 11 or more. A typical Whitefield semi or bungalow is £549, and an EV-ready board with a spare charger way is usually £695. Earthing, tails or bonding are quoted up front if needed.
How a price is built →Why Whitefield chargers start at the board
The housing here is mostly from the 1950s to the 1970s: semis and bungalows around Stand and Park Lane, the Hillock estate, and private estates towards Unsworth. Boards of that era were either original MEM or Wylex units or replacements from the 80s, and most were filled to the last way long ago. When a charger installer arrives, they need a dedicated high-load circuit with RCD protection that suits the charger, and an old board with no spare ways and no room to add them simply cannot provide it.
We fit the board, not the charger. The new metal consumer unit comes with spare ways sized for a 32A charger circuit and, if you want one later, a 40A shower circuit, each with its own RCBO, plus surge protection as standard. Your charger installer then connects to a board that is ready. Driveway homes near junction 17 of the M60 are a short drive for us, and a slot within the week is normal.
Whitefield beside Prestwich, Radcliffe and Bury
Whitefield is often lumped in with Prestwich, but the jobs differ. Prestwich work tends to be about big extensions and older villas; Whitefield is more often a sound post-war house whose board is simply out of date and out of room. There are plenty of bungalows here too, which usually run fewer circuits, so the £449 or £549 package covers most of them. Radcliffe, across the Irwell, has more terraces, and Bury town more rented stock.
Besides chargers, the other common Whitefield request is a bigger electric shower. Many bathrooms here were refitted with a more powerful unit than the original circuit was planned for, often fed from a separate switchfuse next to the board. The new board gives the shower its own RCBO, we test its cable on the day, and if the cable is not up to the load we price that fault before touching it.

Yes, that is how it normally works. We fit an EV-ready board with a spare way sized for the charger circuit and hand you the certificate. Your installer connects the charger afterwards, and the certificate shows them the board is tested and ready.
Not really. Plenty of Whitefield bungalows have an external meter box with the tails running inside to a board in the hall or a kitchen cupboard. Your photos show how long that run is and what state the tails are in, and if they need replacing it is priced before we book.
Someone needs to let us in and be around at the end for the handover, when we walk you through the new board and give you the certificate. In between, the power is off for roughly four to six hours, so many people go out and come back.
